A non-alcoholic beverage is defined as one that has no more than 0.05% alcohol by volume. Other words to describe non-alcoholic products include no, free, zero, low, light or reduced. There has been an increased popularity with low alcohol and alcohol free beverages like wine, spirits, beer, and cocktails. Years ago, the word mocktail was the only was that was used to describe a drink that didn’t contain alcohol.
The term alcohol free, means that the product contains no alcohol. For beverage labeling, a zero proof and alcohol free product is represented by 0.0% vol. When low or non-alcoholic is used, it is below 0.5% alcohol by volume.
To add to the flavor profile and aroma of a non-alcoholic product, an alcohol flavored additive can be added to your beverage. By adding an alcohol flavor, the alcohol version can be mimicked, but the finished product becomes non-alcoholic. For example, an alcohol free spirits are mostly flavor based used to imitate the original product. These unique products are sometimes refereed to as artisanal and alcohol flavored non-alcoholic beverages.
